Do you know that our planet is in a climate crisis? And it threatens our future if we don't act now.The climate crisis is real and its indicators can be seen around the world. For example, The tsunamis happened in 2004, one of the biggest tsunamis happened in Aceh Indonesia because of the earthquake that happened in the Indian Ocean. The blizzards in Iran in 1972, it was one of the deadliest blizzards in history. It is happening all over the world and the animals and plants are dying. It is threatening human existance too.
Indonesia is among the top 3 countries that are highly vulnerable to the effects of the climate crisis (e.g. flood/drought) due to its geographical location and the highest rate of deforestation. So, we especially as Indonesian citizen should prevent this from hapenning. Because, if Indonesia's forests are preserved, it will surely save not only Indonesia, but other countries around the world. As Trees are the lungs of the Earth, they are the heart of the climate crisis.
In our daily lives we may not realise it, but most people pollute the land and sea. The main causes of the climate crisis are factories, which create air pollution, and cutting down trees, which can cause deforestation. All these problems can affect our planet's ecosystem, wildlife and even our existence.
WHY ARE PEOPLE STILL DOING THIS?
It's because they're unaware of the impact their behaviour on the climate crisis.
Based on research data from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology. The quality of environmental education needs to be improved: less than 50% of Indonesians have a deeper understanding of the climate crisis. Only 44% of Indonesians can accurately explain the solutions to environmental problems. This isn't just a problem in Indonesia, it's a global problem all over the world.
As many experts believe, "Quality education towards climate crisis will be the answer".
I also believe that through education, people will be more aware and would change their behaviour towards the environment because it will be implemented in their daily life.
I was inspired to choose quality education on environmental issues for my school project when I visited Ruang Limpah Sungai Lb. I had seen the river polluted with tons of garbage, but still children were swimming in it. {during my last visit with my father}. I asked some of the fishermen what they thought of the daily visitors who litter the river with cigarette butts, plastic and other rubbish. They replied that the river was very clean and there was no pollution around the park. I was very shocked to hear this. It made me realise that these fishermen did not receive a proper environmental education when they were growing up.
What I mean by quality education is that their schools don't teach about pollution, climate change or basic environmental issues in other subjects. So I thought this was an important issue and I wanted to be part of the solution, which is why I chose this topic for my PYP project.
I believe that education on this topic must start from a very young age. So my target group is children from 7 years old to adults. Because investing in young people's education can help us work out how to solve and reduce the impact of climate and environmental crises. Because they can easily change their behaviour and they can also convince their parents to change. So how can we teach young children about this issue? The answer, of course, is FUN interactive GAMES! Because through educational games – children learn better and remember more easily
For my PYPX action, I decided to make card games, because it is quick to set up, portable and easy to play on the go. “Save The Earth” , can be played starting from children of 7 years and above. The game is about the climate crisis, pollution and how people can contribute by changing their behaviour towards the environment. I designed the game with the help of Kak Rizky, a game designer from Sebangku Games. I tested my products on the students of Cikal Lebak Bulus - they had fun playing and at the same time understood the climate crisis.
So whats Next? What should we do to solve this problem?
"The goal of climate education should not stop at understanding, but also through advocacy and collective action".
The meaning of collective action is to try to solve this massive problem together.
First, understanding the problem and the solution.
We can start& acting within our family at home, then up to our neighbourhood.
Education and action in schools. Where all teachers and students should implement this issue in every subject, MLPs and school habit/culture.
Do not stop there! We need to work our way up to government levels so that everyone understands and ACT together to solve this global crisis. Finally, we need to create more awareness and spread the campaign. Lets start by writing a pledge to show your commitment to saving the planet. Then share it with your family and friends or encourage them to take action together.
We Can Do This Together
Love.
